The Institute for Animal Husbandry is Serbia’s leading research institution in livestock breeding, selection, and sustainable production. With expertise in scientific research, education, and policy development, it plays a key role in modernizing animal husbandry and addressing environmental challenges. The 27 researchers in Institute with educational profile of agronomists of all specialties, veterinarians, biologists, chemists, technologists, enables a multidisciplinary approach to solving the problems of modern food production. The researchers are engaged by scientific Departments and Laboratories of Genetics, Chemistry and Microbiology, Products Quality, and Biogas Production. In its long history, the Institute has dealt with the impact of livestock production on the environment and climate change. The work on various projects resulted in numerous scientific papers, but also by presenting the results to students, consultants and farm animal breeders. Aware of the benefits but also the hazards that modern agricultural production causes to the environment, research in the area of ecology and good agricultural practices is continuously conducted. By this proposal, we want to contribute to more environmentally conscious animal production, resource efficiency, and the adoption of environmentally friendly practices.

The Institute is unique for its “open-air laboratory”, spanning 240 hectares of arable land and five experimental farms, where it conducts applied research in livestock production, animal product processing, and sustainable agriculture. This fully integrated field-to fork system allows for the development and testing of climate-smart livestock practices under real conditions. It organizes the international symposium “Modern Trends in Livestock Production”, gathering global experts every two years to exchange knowledge on sustainable  livestock systems.
